Fund Management — Remediating a Business-Critical Financial Model

The Challenge

A leading fund management organisation relied on a highly complex Excel model containing embedded derivatives and numerous calculation dependencies.
Over time, the workbook had grown to approximately 100MB and become increasingly difficult to understand, maintain and operate.
Knowledge of the model was concentrated with its original developer, creating key-person dependency. Analysis also identified issues affecting the reliability of some calculations.

For a model supporting important financial processes, this represented both an operational and control risk.

Our Approach

EUC Solutions analysed the model from both a business and technical perspective.
We reviewed its structure, formulas, dependencies and calculations before redesigning areas of unnecessary complexity.
Rather than simply repairing individual formulas, we focused on making the model more understandable, maintainable and reliable.
Manual processes were automated and the workbook architecture was simplified.

The Outcome

The redesigned model reduced, while improving stability and maintainability.

Reduced the application footprint by approximately 75%
Improved calculation reliability
Reduced unnecessary complexity
Automated manual processes
Reduced key-person dependency
Created a more supportable and controlled application

The Transformation Opportunity

Remediation does not necessarily have to be the final destination.
Once the model is understood and stabilised, specialist vendor technology can potentially allow established calculation logic to be exposed through an API rather than requiring every user or downstream process to interact directly with Excel.

That creates a potential route from:
