Insurance — Modernising Balance Sheet Reconciliation

The Challenge

A leading insurance organisation was using a large Excel-based balance sheet reconciliation application.
The solution contained approximately 100,000 records across multiple worksheets, extensive formulas and very large PivotTable reports.
As the application grew, it experienced memory and performance problems.
A critical financial control process had effectively outgrown the architecture on which it was originally built.

Our Approach

EUC Solutions redesigned the application to reduce the processing burden within Excel.
Formula-heavy datasets were optimised, reporting components were separated from the core model and manual processes were automated.
The objective was not simply to make the spreadsheet faster. It was to create a more resilient architecture for the underlying reconciliation process.

The Outcome

The redesigned solution reduced processing complexity and memory requirements while improving application speed and stability.

The organisation gained:

Improved application performance
Reduced memory requirements
Greater stability
Increased automation
Simplified maintenance
A more resilient reconciliation process

The Transformation Opportunity

High-volume reconciliation is also a strong candidate for moving beyond a traditional spreadsheet architecture.

Calculation and reconciliation logic can potentially be separated from the user interface and exposed through services or APIs.

A web application can then provide users with controlled access to exceptions, approvals, commentary and reporting without exposing the underlying calculation engine.
